The dimensions of the Urnes Style Painted Box are: 27 x 14.5 x 8cm The Urnes style was the last phase of Scandinavian animal art during the second half of the 11th century and in the early 12th century. [1] The preceding phases of Scandinavia's Viking Age animal ornamentation are usually categorized as Oseberg style, Borre style, Jelling style, Mammen style and Ringerike style. The last of the animal ornamentation styles of the Viking Age, the Urnes style featured very elegant motifs of great beasts and interweaving loops and tendrils. It was popular from c. 1040 until at least 1100 CE, also in Viking colonies such as the one in Ireland . The pretzel-knot interlace below the body of the beast is more typical for the Ringerike style than the Urnes style, which almost exclusively displays figure-of-eight loops as seen above the body of the beast.
